The Craftsman

The Bacalao II was 8 years in construction, starting as a 23', it is now a custom 31'

A great new boat has just been added to our fishing fleet here, and it is owned and operated by one of our best captains. German (pronounced er-man), the son of a local fisherman, grew up fishing in Zihuatanejo and has known no other life. For several years now he has been taking a considerable following of repeat clients out in his panga Bacalao. As his business card says, he is a "catch and release specialist". His abilities to catch sailfish, combined with a great sense of humor and dedication to the client, have made him a very well liked and respected fisherman.

German has recently completed the refurbishing of a beautiful 30 foot cruiser and is now taking clients out who prefer a little more comfort than a panga offers. With his many years of fishing experience and working with clients, he knew what was required in a boat. The clients need safety and comfort, yet it needs to be accomplished without sacrificing the boat’s fishing abilities. The Bacalao II is a boat that is perfect for both the client and fishing in these waters. There is a lot of shade, yet the large cockpit area is unobstructed for fishing. The cabin is large, airy and comfortable. German operates the boat from up on the flybridge and there is plenty of room to join him for casual conversation, taking pictures, or just to enjoy the sights.

German’s brother, José Angel has worked for several years with the Port Captain’s office and is the captain of our local search and rescue vessel. José Angel helped his brother refurbish the Bacalao II, and you can be assured, when it came down to the final details, safety was foremost in their minds. One of the things which impressed me the most, besides the usual required safety gear, almost every horizontal surface on the Bacalao II is covered with a light weight fiberglass skid proof surfacing.

I have fished on this boat several times with German and clients. It is a fish raising machine and has an excellent ride. The Bacalao II can easily fish 4 clients in comfort for a very reasonable $300.00 a day.

German works out of both Puerto Mio and the municipal pier. He can be reached at his home (554-2852) or his cell phone (044-755-557-7594).
